An Idea Considered In Verse

The words are locked within
And I have the key
But I cannot seem
To find it today
As I stumble my way
To two good thousand words
Which is a great good sum
To have but done
Save unless
You're a fool like me
Seeking to write
A million words
In a year or less
Which I confess
Might seem strange to you
But if you can do
Such an improbable thing
Then why the Welles not

Not that I could ever be like him
But I invoked him because I could
Just as like
I can write a million words
In a well writ year
Though it's painfully clear
To others in my life
That I'm fooling myself
With the well writ part
I'm committed still
Because it's in my blood

And don't you think
That the goodly chase
Successful or not
Of a million words
Could well but be
Worthy of a following

Or is it as stupid a thing
As competing for a job
With a questionable slob
Or doing challenges in the wild
And being voted out
To name but two
That just between me and you
Is stupid yes
But has been a fixture
On all our screens
For oh so long
I can scarcely remember
A time without their like

And I don't even need to be a show
So I'm cheaper to be but sure
And cooler to boot
Because that's a daily duel
Of mind over matter
Where each day does
Like will he or won't he
How can he possibly write
So goodly much
Without no fail

Or if he does of course
As he surely will
How can he make it up
In the days that follow
Wouldn't you follow that

Well maybe not you
You like to read
But find no gripping good
In the foolish quest
Of a man but far from that
Who seeks to do
A most improbable thing

Yeah where's the drama there
None that I can see
Save I'm telling a fib
That's got drama yes
Written all but over it

And I'll even leave it all
Yes hanging free
In the sense of being there
For all to read
Who think it's worth
An undetermined sum
By the goodly day
Or sweetful month
Whatever I think
Could work the best

Though I could be wrong
And not a single goodly soul
Would even pay
A penny a day
To read the writing
Of a writer seeking to write
A million words
Crappy or not
It's the best hope I got
To make a goodly mark

And all I'd need
If I did the penny a day
Would be five good thousand souls
Paying not even four damn bucks
For a whole good year
Of writing but worth a read
Or just because you believe
In the right of a fool to dream
As improbable a dream as mine

And surely to hell
There's five good thousand
Even less would do
Who'd dare to dream with me

The words are locked within
And I found the key
But as I look at the time
I sigh because
I found it  too damn late
To have me a day
That I call great

Only tomorrow's another day
So fuckin' eh
I'll take the loss
Because I'm a boss
When it comes to writing
Well writing lots
And I will make it up
In the days to come
So I'm not glum
And there's time but still
With a writer's will
To have at it high
So don't you cry
Yes cry for me
Just think to pay
A penny a day
For The writing of a fish
It's not a crazy wish
Because crazier things
Have come to be true
