Late In The Day

It's late in the day
And I have to say
It hasn't been
The easiest of ones
For your favourite Fish
Who has the wish
To make success
His home address
As the first good quarter

That I but had
Was not the first
Nor even the second
But was the third instead

Now that is not to say at all
That the morning was
Like lost in a fog
Of what I'd do
It's just true
That I saved the best for last

If I want to stand myself fast
Amongst the goodly heights
Of this year's best
Which is the range
I'm writing in now

Not that you asked
Or even care
But you are here
And it is clear
That I most often write about me
When it comes to poetry
Which might explain
The lack of acclaim
Save for one damn thing
Name a poet today
To which you can point and say
I know them
They're the best

You can't can you
Nor can I
I wouldn't even try
I'm a poet because
It comes easy to me
Like near but effortless
When I'm on my game
And I often am
If only that game alas
Was like the balls
Of the goodly base and foot
And basket of course
Where those who play it
Are filthy fucking rich
Not to bitch
But wouldn't it be nice
To earn their check

But the market only pays them
What it will bear

And ain't no one to care
Even close to that
About the goodly versers
Of which I'm but one
And that ain't no bragging
It's just the truth
Though I have no proof
Like thousands of hits
And dozens of readers
Even comments glowing
Of we love the Fish
Just keep swimming
You're naught but winning
All our hearts and minds

No I'm still a who
Like who are you
And why should we care
That you but dare
In prose and poetry
Because neither moves us no
So you should go
And get yourself a job
That no one has to know you yes
For you to claim success
Because you're not cut yourself out

For such a thing

Not that you have to quit
You just gotta heed us please
You'll never be
The writer reknowned
The poet famous
Even if your quest
To be the best
That you can be
By writing a million words
Drawing a thousand drawings
And writing three hundred polls
Is fully found
It won't make you rich
So do it on the side
And take some pride
In doing this
Just because you can
Because not all good deeds
Can gain gain you what
You fervently wish them to

It's late in the day
And I have to say
It wasn't the easiest of ones
With the power out
For hours yes
And the weather sucking
That left me in a mood
But often angry
LIke cartoonishly so
Yet here I be
Giving you the poetry
You didn't know you needed
Two short months ago
As I find myself
In the goodly midst
Of my best quarter yet

It's late in the day
And I'm glad to say
That this is me
Though not so late
As I have but more myself
Than the metaphorical three
That this day has in real
Like give or take a few
For I have decades left for me
To live my best life
Or in short
Because I've gone long
I've saved my best
For the latter stages
And I'll keep bringing it
You can be sure of that
You can be sure of that indeed
