The Russell Macklemore Experience #22

16:26-17:59=93 And 18:10-18:23=13
The second season continues with the second episode of season two and we open with Picard exiting his Ready Room and sitting down in the Captain's Chair and Troi knowing that he's worried.

His worry is about Riker and Worf.

Have we begun the episode in the midst of some trouble for an Away Team made up of only Riker and Worf? That would be an unusually small Away Team.

Ah, it's Worf's morning calisthenics and Riker was just joining him this one time.

That would be tough for any human, even one as presumably fit as a then young and in his prime First Officer.

We got to the meat of the of the episode which was the discovery of a void in space into which they sent two probes before moving in closer.

And then they were enveloped into the void and no one on the ship could hear the bridge.

That's not good.

Fortunately it was a minor interruption as all was right with internal communication when they returned from the commercial break.

Dr. Pulaski came onto the bridge and once again had a stupid interaction with Data as she called him it and wondered if he knew what he was doing.

Oh Dr, Pulaski, the whole not used to an android like Data who's living and a superior officer to boot is already tedious.

She's tedious. Though that's surely about the directing and the script rather than her acting.

They set a beacon in place and tried to leave the void and came around back to the same beacon.

They weren't going to leave the void with any ease.

Excitement! They encountered a Romulan ship and destroyed it, though too easily for Picard's liking.

Next came an encounter with their sister ship, who was reportedly nowhere near them, not that that stopped them from going aboard her.

A minimal Away Team too, which just happened to be Riker and Worf.

It was not their sister ship and nothing much happened while they were over, save that there were two bridges and Worf needed to be reminded to get control of himself.

Meanwhile, a path out of the void was offered them but they couldn't beam Riker and Worf back to the Enterprise, daring Picard to make a choice of sacrificing Riker and Worf or staying in the void.

He stayed of course and in short order, they were able to beam them back.

And then we met the alien asshole that was Nagilum, who was curious about the differences in construction between Data the men and Dr. Pulaski.

Pulaski but not Troi, who was on the bridge of course.

Picard answered that that was how we procreate, the differences that is and he wanted to see that acted out, as Worf stood next to Pulaski.

That didn't happen of course because that's not the kind of show. And also, we are not there for his amusement.

He wanted to see all the manners of death that humans could experience and said that would only take a 1/3, maybe 1/2 the crew.

Sorry Nagilum, who is fortunately fictional, but futt you.

And that was the answer by Picard after a meeting with his officers, not his staff, which was a term that he used in the last episode,

So he and Riker set the auto-destruct for 20 minutes.

Picard was in his Ready-Room during the 20 minutes when he was joined by Data and Troi who were not reacting as he expected them to.

It turns out it wasn't them and he continued to let time to their destruction tick down to zero.

Obviosuly it didn't get down to zero which would have blowed the ship up but good, but it did get down to less than a minute as Nagilum had released them.

So he halted the countdown and Riker was very explicit in his agreement with his captain to stop the countdown.

That was cute and was commented on by Picard, both with an expression and his words.

Nagilum made one more appearance, this time on the screen in Picard's Ready-Room with the last of his blah blah.

I'm glad we didn't see him again, though it would have been interesting to see him got toe to toe with Q and see who was more powerful.

Well, that's interesting., they could set the time of the interval in this episode, but not in the episode that took place in the first season.

Was that a continuity error or just an unstated upgrade?

It could be either, but at the end of the day, it's a minor one. Yes it could have been explained, but no, it's not a big thing this long after the shows was on the air.

I liked the episode but again, it was not enjoyable. There's a fine difference of course, but a difference nonetheless.

However the next episode, that I am tempted to watch now is one of the better ones of the whole series.

But that would be telling and I am not in the mood to tell,

Yes, you can look it up and know for yourself it is one of the better ones in your estimation but I both liked and enjoyed it.

However, I think that the rewatching of that episode can wait until tomorrow.

My trekking for the day is done.
