The Russell Macklemore Experience #6

It's Saturday. What better day to watch an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation because that was when it was shown on the station that I watched it on when I was growing up in the countryside between the American border and Montreal.

And the episode that I am now watching, Lonely Among Us, is about two races of aliens that are enemies.

That's also the proper usage of the word too because remember, all the people on the Earth are of the same race, human.

Well, except for the Lizard people of course.

Ha.

Enslaving animals for meat?

Wow, that's an insult to farmers. Admittedly I am biased because I grew up on a farm and we had animals.

They were not enslaved.

If I were to be as free with the language as I feel like being right now, I would cuss the writing out for such a statement.

When the entity took over Dr. Crusher after encountering Worf, I was disappointed in the reactions of both Picard and Data as they failed to see how oddly she was acting  when in control of the entity.

Also, what was up with you Dr. Crusher, not saying what am I doing here because the last thing that I remember was that I was in Sickbay.

Or would that have made it too easy?

This was the episode where Data's fascination with Sherlock Holmes began.

Cool.

Bye bye Mr. Singh We hardly knew you. And he was wearing gold.

Hypnosis?

Meh?

Oh shiite!

The entity is in Picard and his crew hasn't known him long enough to know when something's up have they?

Troi senses something is up doesn't she?

Oh my gawd!

It's Mile O'Brien's first appearance!

This was one of their earliest tests of them standing together as all of the command staff, outside of Picard, who was the subject of their discussion.

Did Riker act a little soft in his support of Crusher and Troi?

And then Picard straight up admitted that he wasn't himself alone anymore.

Wouldn't that have been enough for them to relieve him of command?

Apparently not.

And at the end of the episode, the entity and Picard are about to leave the Entrerprise and they just let it happen like they hadn't even prepared for shit to go down.

That's weak sauce no?

It all ended well though as he was separated from the entity after beaming into space and able to be reconsituted as himself through transporterative doings.

And because of his ordeal, he wisely let Riker deal with the delegates who were busy killing each other.

Well, one of the delegates was killed and the other race wanted to eat him.

Surely a vegetarian/vegan would agree with me, a ,man who eats meat that is is different from what humans do when we eat cow, pig, bird and fish yes?

No?

Probably not.

And they probably won't agree that plantlife  has feelings too.

Because they don't have a face right?

Hey, I'm pretty laissez-faire but I'll get heated about a few things and being anti-meat for yourself is fine, though getting protein is a thing that they have to worry about.

It's quite another though when they come along and tell me that we are awful for eating meat.

Fortunately, I've never met one of those vegetarians/vegans because that would not be a conversation either of us would care for.

I liked the episode and I am enjoying this rewatching.

I won't ask if you're enjoying my writing about the episodes because it's clear you aren't keen on answering anyone who posts here, be they human or alien.

But you do you.

And I'll do me.

The Canadiens are playing in Florida against the Panthers right now and the Panthers can smell the playoffs as they are a manageable 5 points out, though they too have  had a season to be forgotten as they have an eight game snide of their own, though it's eight games  at home, and not a natural streak of wretchedness.

They've also only done it once, rather than twice like the Canadiens, who aren't yet mathematically eliminated.

But if they can't string together at least games with the full two points, starting tonight, which wouldn't guarantee them anything, they are certain to fall short of the playoffs for a third straight season.

As it stands, they have 13 games left and they have to win them all, which isn't even a guarantee.

So bottom line, they aren't mathematically eliminated, they were probably spiritually elminated in the wake of the final streak of wretchedness which was only five games and not the the eight games.

Of course, winning their last 13 games would be enough to maybe trip up the Leafs if they continue to struggle as their position in the playoffs is not guaranteed either. And that game is the last of the season and could well be a game that will desperately need.

And yes, it would be a shame if they were bounced out of the playoffs after getting swept in the season series by the Montreal Canadiens.

So strap them on Habs and win your last 13 games eh?

Le sigh.

It won't happen though. I know this. But it's nice to imagine  for even a moment.

Meanwhile, thanks to covid-19, the 2020 Women's World Hockey Championship  has been cancelled.

That's a shame, but health first. And it's not the first tournament cancellation, nor will it be the last.

Like the Olympics I'm thinking.

As for the shame of this cancellation, that's more a shame for the United States than Canada, as It's the US side that has won nine for the last eleven since winning their first in 2005.

And last year Canada was beaten in the semis by Finland and are the first of the two top Hockey powers in the World Championships to not play for Gold.

On the Olympics' side it was the Americans who have that fact on their record which happened in 2006.

But the American program is running smoothly and has more money and players to choose from than Canada's.

Ugh.

Not that the Canadian program has any reason to be down in the mouth, it's just that the omen's game is tilted in favour of the Americans right now.

Boo.

It's late in the 1st and there's going to be any scoring that's going to be a boost to the team that scores as early and late goals are the ones that a team hates most.

Though maybe that's just me?

No, it isn't.

Early and late goals are just bad and take a toll that others don't.

Especially in the third.

But no goals were scored. Though that also means the Canadiens haven't scored for four straight periods which is not a good sign when they went as deep into the season as they did without getting shutout.

Don't let this be a thing as their scoring completely vanishes.

But that would be in keeping with this season as they've already had three wretched streaks of losing, what's one more?

The second period is underway

And about half the way into it, the second power play of the night has been called.and it's once again a power play for the Panthers.

Though seeing as it's still a scoreless game, the first power play didn't hurt the Habs.

Of course this being a season to be forgotten already, the Panthers are going to score at some point.

And score they did. After the power play.

This is not good as both Florida teams have combined to score the last five goals that the Habs have given up

Ugh, are they going to get swept in Florida like the Leafs got swept in California?

Though at least Florida only has two teams  so it would only be a two game streak instead of a three gamer.

But the Leafs are in a playoff spot now and the Habs are not.

Ugh, what a hard season to endure.

And to think they were playing their best hockey when that first streak happened.

The Habs are in the midst of a long stretch of power play hockey and they haven't scored yet.

Ugh.

They need at least a goal out of this lengthy bit of power play hockey.

So of course they won't score.

And Florida will.

That's a given.

They can't buy a goal now can they, not even when it's a 5 on 3.

Futt me.

And the period is almost over.

Dammit.

There are times where it absolutely sucks to be right, like when you see a lead being increased and it gets increased.

Yes, it's the 3rd period now and the Habs are down 3-0.

It sure felt like it was over when they were down by two and it's certainly over with them down by three.

The only question is will they get blanked in back to games or can they score a single solitary goal so they aren't blanked in Florida when months ago, just giving up 4 and 3 goals in back to bak games would have netted them 4 points becauuse when they were in FLoriida then, they were scoring.

But that's not how it works.

Phew.

They scored a goal!!!!

Yeah, they're going to lose, but at least they won't be blanked in back to back games which could have easily snowballed into some kind of awful streak of shutout games.

Of course, they're only down by two.

It'd be sweet if they could do to the Panthers what other teams have done to them, which is to come back from what should be a safe lead of 3 goals.

That it would also wound the Panthers' hopes at making it to the playoffs would just be icing on the cake of suck that has been the Habs' season.

Hey, just because they have been too much of a hot mess since November doesn't mean they're supposed to just be an automatic two points for the other team.

Play entire games eh! They are paid for entire games.

Sadly, for the Habs, down by two with as little time left as they have to play sure seems like too much for them.

And if they score the next goal, while playing at even strength, they'll of course have to rely on getting a goal with the goalie pulled which is not something that the Habs are usually able to do.

At least in forever.

And now with 3 minutes left to play, it's going to be another loss, which will end the Panthers' 8 game home ice losing streak.

Oh bother as Sutheran liked to write.

Of course!

The Panthers got an empty netter.

The only good coming out of this game is that the Habs didn't get blanked, though they left Florida getting outscored by 7 goals.

When does the mathematical elimination happen? Because there's no way these Habs are going to win 12 straight.

And that would only get them to 95 points when people think that it's going to take more than that.

So what are they playing for now since the odds of them making the playoffs are slim and none and slim has its jacket, tuque and gloves on and is ready to step out the door.

Can they actually play their way to the playoffs next season, or will the Habs have to do a complete rebuild?

Ugh, I hate the idea of that, but if it worked and the Habs won a Cup because of a rebuild, it would be worth it. And they wouldn't have to win just one this way. They could do like the Blackhawks and win three in the same decade.

If they drafted the right players during this rebuild and played smartly.

Will that happen though?

Probably not.

Okay, it's in the final hours of the day and I am going to do something else now because I'm not going to watch another episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, the Habs' game is over and I'm not going to watch any other show.

Also, it's the final hours of Standard Time and maybe I'm going to go out as there's going to be one less hour available for people who are out enjoying time out.

And I am probably going to be one of those people.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
